With only a few hours remaining to fly to Kenya to witness The Great Migration Trip In Masai Mara, I am all too excited and anxious at the same time. There’s a lot to photograph and a lot to do which is exciting. But then, there’s a lot of expectations from 4 avid bird photographers who are joining me.

I am eager to meet my 4 participants on this Great Migration Trip in Masai Mara

and to make it a memorable experience. You’ll hopefully see a whole load of wildlife images once I am back. Hopefully, a fantastic story to carry with them.

The opportunity comes only once in a while and only a few photographers seem to grab it before it’s too late. And 4 such avid bird photographers did grab the opportunity to come with me to The Great Migration in Masai Mara. This might prove to be well worth their time, effort, and money.

Here’s is another opportunity, which is larger than life. It’s a birding extravaganza that’s irresistible to any bird photographer. I dubbed it as a Trip Of A Lifetime for a great reason. Read on my fascinating story to understand the reason. Hopefully, after reading my story you’ll agree that it’s indeed a trip of a lifetime.

It Was The Tipping Point In My Career

Here’s a fascinating story of how I became good at what I do – Bird Photography. You might not know that I struggled much more than a normal bird photographer. It’s true. Today’s photographers have access to every information that they ever need. In fact, more than they need. There are thousands of blog posts, videos, self-published eBooks (including mine), group workshops, and tailor-made workshops like this.

Most of what I learned in past 8 or 9 years is from Digital Photography School blog (first few years), few great books on photography, and most importantly by demystifying the photographs of the master photographers. I would always try and decompose a photograph that I love, to see how it’s made. I’ll ask several questions like:

  • What was in the photographer’s mind?
  • Why he/she took it that way?
  • How can I use it in my own compositions?
  • The list goes on…

With these inquiries and visualization, I was gaining immense knowledge. But then, no matter what I did, I wasn’t able to pull out the shots that I visualized. There was some missing link. In fact, even today I feel I miss many shots that I would have loved to take. The miss and hit ratio is becoming extremely high as the day progresses.

I am kind of a perfectionist by heart. I must say I have many imperfect photographs which I shamelessly published as well. You might find many. I have a tiny number of photos I truly feel proud of.

Back then, I wasn’t really sure why I was not able to make the best photos. I was the most knowledgeable guy in the photographer’s circle. No matter whether I was in Sweden or India or

, I was always considered a knowledgeable guy and a go-to guy for many.

But I wasn’t happy with my photographs. Secretly I would blame myself for not able to pull the perfect shots.

However, I slowly started to realize the secret behind making successful images. I was able to convert my visualization into reality. And that secret is…Location. Yes! You heard it right. Location mattered the most.

I pulled off most of my best photographs invariably in the birding hotspots. Be it the photographs of Sarus Cranes, Bald Eagles, Egrets, and many more bird photographs that you love, they are all made in the famous birding locations.

The importance of location hit me really on my head when I visited Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary. It was a revelation of sorts. I made the most successful images in Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary than in any other place combined. It was a tipping point in my career.

I took considerable steps when I came back from the US and was ready to go to Bharatpur for the first time. I decided to go with a full-frame camera, Nikon D750 because I was sick and tired of the

notorious noise. Then I replaced my shorter prime lens Nikon 300mm f/2.8 to a longer telephoto lens Nikon 600mm f/4.

Most importantly I decided to go to Bharatpur for 15 days. Yes! 15 days. I still remember the reaction from Devendra, Iora Guest House owner, who said he was startled to hear that I want to go there for 15 full days. He thought I am mad. And I was J. Typically most photographers go there for 3 to 5 days.

I had made a decision that it should be now or never. I had a firm conviction that I have to pull off some great shots. I wanted to test my knowledge, passion, patience, perseverance, and above all enthusiasm. I wanted to know if I can sustain for 15 days at a stretch doing only what I love to do and still be enthusiastic.

I think I passed that exam with flying colors. I was darn tired. I was exhausted to death. But, I was there. I was making some of my most memorable photographs. For the first time, I was in the ZONE as said by Michael Jordon.

It was all my years of hard work, relentless learning, and practice that came together to prove that I was capable of pulling off some of the best shots. I cannot really express my feelings in words. You probably know it by now.

Now…why am I saying all this to you?

Experience The True Joy Of Birding

I want to you experience it yourself. I want you to take a test of your passion, patience, and perseverance. I want you to get into that zone when you experience the sheer joy of photographing. The ultimate joy of bringing your vision into reality is next to none. It’s definitely not an exaggeration if I say it’s worth a million.

How about being guided in the right direction by the one who has already done it time and again? Wouldn’t it be great?

What if I say I will help you find that zone? What if I get you out of the ordinary rut of making boring photographs to something that’s extraordinary? The pictures that make you proud just the way I am proud of mine even after 4 years.

I know you secretly wish you could pull it out yourself in a few years by going to many different trips. But, let me assure you I have done it for more than 5 or 6 years before coming to terms with the secret of success. Don’t be fooled by your intelligence. It’s the hard work which has brought the success to anyone in any field. It’s never the intelligence or even talent alone.

It’s not easy. But, it’s not tough either if you are in the right hands.

I can assure you that an exclusive bird photography trip for 25 days can reveal your attitude towards photography. It can be a life-changing experience just the way it was for me. Whether it’ll be a tipping point in your life or not, it’ll be a fulfilling experience for sure.

What I am really looking forward to is, bringing a team of just 4 avid photographers together to create an ultimate birding experience. I have always seen that a group of photographers working in tune makes it for a great learning experience. Something that can push you up the scale by several times than if you were doing it alone. It’s like a mastermind group if you are aware of.

Believe me; I have had such experiences while talking or shooting with other pros. When we discuss several aspects of photography, we tend to learn a lot from each other. We tend to understand how differently or similarly we think about a topic. It’s a revelation in itself and an experience I always long for.

Do You Think 25 Days Is Too Much?

I know it sounds too complicated to take nearly a month holiday. Or, is it? It could be hard to convince your manager (unless you are your own boss) or the beloved ones. More than that it could mean staying away from the beloved ones for a whole month. It’s uncomfortable. But then nothing worthwhile in life is achieved without getting out of your comfort zone. Isn’t it?

It could mean an emotional dilemma about one’s duty and responsibility versus the burning desire to achieve greater creative success.

I have been in that situation. It was the first time in our 3 years of marriage that I was leaving my wife behind on a photography trip for as long as 15 days. It wasn’t easy at all. It was a moral dilemma. I was completely torn between my love and passion. But luckily my wife understands my madness and knows what I’ll go through in such situations. I had to prove to myself. I had to do something phenomenal. I madly wanted to turn my vision into reality. She completely understood that (not that she understands all the times 🙂 ). She knew I couldn’t do it if she were with me because I might not be able to give my 100%.

That single step to leave behind everything to prove something was a game changer. And it truly changed the game.

Why not take that ONE STEP today? Why not convince yourself first that you really need to unleash your complete creative potential? Why not make a promise to your beloved ones that you’d want to test your passion?

Remember…if you truly desire for something, your dear ones will understand it. I guarantee it.
