Post-Processing Video Course For Nature Photographers Using Adobe Lightroom Classic CC

It’s Time To Put Up A Performance!

“The negative is the equivalent of the composer’s score, and the print the performance.” — Ansel Adams

If you know about Ansel Adams, you might very well know that he was the master of post-processing. He developed the infamous Zone-system that helped him to push the boundaries of what’s possible with a single negative.

Ansel Adams mastered both the Field Photography and Dark-room Processing techniques. So, the performance (using processing) he was able to bring out from the enviable score (the negative based on the zone-system and the visualization technique) made him a world-renowned photographer.

If we have to rewrite Ansel Adams quote to represent today’s scenario, it might read like this:

“The RAW file is the equivalent of the composer’s score, and the processed file the performance.”

If your RAW file isn’t any good, don’t even think of spending the time to post-process the file. Because it just ain’t good.

If your RAW file is good, then post-processing becomes a vital part of the image making process. It ain’t done until it’s done.

While I have covered how to get the best possible exposure (loosely based on the concept that of zone-system) in the field in my Kick-Ass Guide to Exposure eBook, here I am presenting you with a video course that deals with the post-processing. In other words, bringing out the performance from your score.

Free Sample Video

Here’s a sample video where I discuss about one of the vital targeted adjustments tools in Adobe Lightroom–The Radial Filter Tool. This smaple video is part of the 38 course videos you find in the course.

But Learning Post-Processing Can Be Daunting

I accept and acknowledge, more than anyone else, that learning post-processing can be a daunting task. I have struggled a lot. I hated it for many years. Not because, it was tough to learn, which it was, but because I couldn’t get the results that I was after.

I am sure it’s something you might have faced. Especially, now that the post-processing tools like Adobe Lightroom are so easy to use.

Here’s Why Lightroom Is Unbelievably Simple

I got the following result with just tweaking Exposure & Shadows and used the HSL panel! That’s about it. Nothing else. And you’d be able to see it for yourself in the 021-Adobe-Lightroom-Develop-Module-HSL-Color-Panel-Part-2.mp4 video.

How about this? I have used just two Graduated Filters on this photo! And you’d be able to see it for yourself in the 011-Adobe-Lightroom-Develop-Module-Graduated-Filter-Tool-In-Depth.mp4 video.

Don’t you think you can do this too? I bet you do.

If you have tried using any of the post-processing tools for a few times, then you might even downright hate them. Because, most often than not, the JPEG photo from the Camera looks much better than your post-processed photo. It’s okay to accept it.

You might not realize is that it’s actually the case with everyone when they start off, pros or otherwise.

We never learned anything in our first few attempts. Did we? It took several attempts before we learned to walk, talk, write, code, etc.. But, several years later it all seems so easy and natural. You might even wonder if someone struggles with something that you are proficient with. It happens all the times, isn’t it?

Can You Learn Post-Processing?

Why not? What’s stopping you to learn? It was never this easy before Adobe introduced Lightroom, you know. Learning Photoshop was nothing short of getting a college degree. Have you tried it anytime? It’s not an exaggeration. Ask anyone who mastered Photoshop at least to a decent degree, they’ll stand by my words.

Adobe® Lightroom®, on the other hand, was a blessing for all the photographers. It was like holding the iPhone in your hand for the first time as opposed to all those clunky phones back in 2007. iPhone was just so simple and intuitive, isn’t it?

Why Adobe® Lightroom®?

Adobe® Lightroom® is simple, straightforward, and easy-to-use post-processing software. You can literally be up and running in a matter of a few hours. Let me assure that it’s not an exaggeration. I have taught the Adobe Lightroom to newbies within 1.5 hours. They were confident of using it right after the course.

If you know just 15 sliders in the following two screenshots, you’ll be able to post-process most of your photographs.

Adobe Lightroom Creative Cloud Post-Processing Video Course for Nature, Wildlife, Bird, and Landscape Photographers by Prathap D K

Most of the post-processing happens with this Basic Panel and 12 Sliders!

Adobe Lightroom Creative Cloud Post-Processing Video Course for Nature, Wildlife, Bird, and Landscape Photographers by Prathap D K

12 Sliders from Basic Panel combined with Sharpening & Noise Reduction should get you started on the right foot!

Now, how long does it take to learn them? Perhaps, a few minutes. Perhaps, an hour. Isn’t that cool?

Why Adobe® Lightroom® Classic CC?

There are two versions after Adobe migrated to Cloud. One version is called Adobe® Lightroom® CC and the other one is called Adobe® Lightroom® Classic CC.

For the video course, I have used Adobe® Lightroom® Classic CC as I have been using the Classic format for several years now. If I understand properly the Adobe® Lightroom® CC is a toned-down cloud-based version of Adobe® Lightroom® Classic CC.

However, There Was An Issue

Though my students were thrilled to learn that Lightroom was super easy to use, it finally depended on when they would literally start using it. Because we normally remember a fraction of what we learned. So, the more the student delays using the Lightroom, the more difficult it becomes.

What If My Students Could Hear Me Out Again And Again?

Wouldn’t it be cool? That’s what I thought.

All that I did I recorded my post-processing course on to a video which can be replayed as many times as you like. One key change that I brought in is that I just didn’t care how much time it’ll end up.

That made it very easy for me to explain all the concepts taking as much time as each concept deserved.  I didn’t cut corners.

Thrice As Long & Twice As Good

So, my course became thrice that of my personal coaching class. And I am hoping in the process it became twice as good. The video course is close to 6 hours! That’s a lot I know. But, since it’s broken into multiple videos that are easy to access, I am hoping you won’t be overwhelmed.

Why Not Learn It All By Yourself?

You can learn Lightroom (or any other software for that matter) on your own. The only caveat is that you might get confused with multiple sliders and panels working on the same pixels. Because all the sliders are working on a single image. They are all manipulating the pixels in the same image.

While it’s possible to get mastery over the tool with plenty of practice and trial and error, I would say that it might not be worth your time. We all have done it before. We all have tried to save a few dollars here and there by trying to fix something on our own, only to make matters worse and ending up paying double sometimes more. Isn’t it?

That’s Why I Created This Video Course

It’s important to lay the right foundation and to set the right expectations. Here are a few points that you’ll learn:

  • Get to know what are the capabilities of Adobe Lightroom software
  • Learn about different panels that it supports and their functionality
  • Get to know when and how to use each of the sliders
  • Get to know the most important panels and sliders that are applicable universally
  • Get to know some special panels and sliders that help you work on targeted areas to create impact
  • Learn what’s possible and what’s not
  • Learn what’s good and what’s extreme post-processing
  • Learn some key shortcuts that will make your post-processing a breeze
  • Learn some time-saver actions that help you cut down the post-processing time by several times
  • Understand how they all come together to bring out the desired results

No matter how easy the tool is, it requires several months and years of experience to get a mastery over it. You can imagine how easy it is to click the Shutter Button, but if just a click of a button could make anyone a photographer, then everyone is already a photographer. Right?

So, if you allow me, I can guide you through the process of choreographing the whole effort to get the required results.

From Absolute Beginners to Intermediates

I have made this course keeping absolute beginners in mind. Even if you don’t know anything about Lightroom, you’ll be able to get up to the speed once you complete the course. So, you don’t have to worry about being left out. I’ll take you through every step starting from how to organize your photographs in the system till exporting the photographs for social media with watermarks.

If you already have some experience with Lightroom, then you’d be able to see if you are doing it the right way. Or, you’ll be able to jump straight to the sections that you are struggling with. The videos are split tactically so that it’ll be easy to find them. The naming convention is just simple and straightforward making it easy for you to know what a particular video is all about.

Here’s What I have Covered In This Course

Primarily, I have covered the two main modules—Library Module & Develop Module—in the Adobe Lightroom Classic CC that you’ll be using for all your post-processing needs.

Here’s a screenshot of Adobe Lightroom Classic CC Library Module.

Here’s the complete breakup of all the modules I have covered in the video course.

Note: I have left out some modules intentionally either because they are not useful or I don’t use them personally. I have mentioned them in my course.

Folder Structure (4:11 minutes)

You might not realize how critical it is to follow a simple and efficient folder structure until several years into photography. It’ll be one of the pain-staking things after 3-5 years of photography when you look back and see all your RAW files haphazardly stored and you have no way to know where to find photos from a particular photo shoot.

In the folder structure video, I give you an extremely simple way to organize your folder structure that can work for years. It’s also quite easy to find the files from any shoot from any year.

Folder Structure

Import-Module (6:34 minutes)

Import module helps you import all the RAW files from a folder at once into the Lightroom to post-process. It helps you to apply Keywords (that gets added to the Metadata of the files) which will be useful if you want to search those files. And, keywords might also prove to be useful when you publish these photos on the Internet. Because Google relies on keywords to search for a specific photo. If your photo happens to be one of the very few in the world which Google is trying to find, it’ll show up in the Google Images results.

Launching Lightroom (1:55 minutes)

In this video, I’ll give a brief introduction to launching the Lightroom software.

Library Module Overview (9:44 minutes)

In this module, you’ll learn various aspects like how to view photos in various modes, how to view metadata of each photo, how to edit the Keywords, how to sort files based on keywords, search for files, etc.

Library Module — Image Culling (14:57 minutes)

Image culling module takes you through a simple yet powerful way of selecting the images for processing. You’ll learn how to Pick a photo or Reject a photo (or multiple photos) using Flagging feature with just a press of a button. Then you’ll learn my most favorite technique called “Iterative Selection Process” using the Rating system. You’ll also know exactly why you should be spending more time in the Image Culling process and not in the post-processing stage.

Once you follow this simple technique, your post-processing will be a breeze. It’s hard to believe the effectiveness of this process until you see it and use it for yourself.

Develop Module Overview (6:38 minutes)

Develop module is where all the magic happens provided you have carefully followed all the previous steps. In this video, you’ll get a quick overview of what’s there in the Develop Module. After the overview, you’ll be spending the most time in understanding each of the panels one-by-one along with some examples that demonstrate how they work.

Develop Module — Crop & Straighten Tool (10:03 minutes)

Crop and straighten tool is a basic tool that you will use on almost every single nature photograph. You’ll learn how to crop using different Aspect Ratios or use a Custom Ratio. Also, you’ll learn simple ways to Straighten the Horizon without which your photos look unsettling to the viewer.

Develop Module — Spot Removal Tool (10:43 minutes)

Spot Removal tool helps you to remove sensor dust spots in your photographs quickly and efficiently with just a click of a button. It also provides an option to Clone out the unwanted distractions in a photo.

Develop Module — Graduated Filter Tool (15:26 minutes)

Graduated Filter Tool is probably the most useful tool when it comes to post-processing landscape photos. It works very similar to the Graduated Neutral Density (GND) filter that you can use in the field. Just that in Lightroom it’s a lot more powerful as the filter allows you to work on several different aspects on a specific area in a photo—Targeted Adjustments.

Develop Module — Radial Filter Tool (7:16 minutes)

Radial Filter Tool is probably is quite useful for portrait photographers. However, it can also be very useful in case of bird/wildlife photography also as I have demonstrated in the course. It works very similarly to the Graduated Filter Tool and it’s quite easy to use too. The Radial Filter tool can be useful in emphasizing just the subject while de-emphasizing the background. It can be a powerful tool if used with caution as I have explained in the course.

Develop Module — Adjustment Brush Tool (17:40 minutes)

Adjustment brush tool was probably the most sought-after tool by the initial Lightroom users.

Because Photoshop was terrific at targeted adjustments using the infamous Layers & Masks techniques. Without the targeted adjustments capabilities Lightroom wouldn’t have been a choice for most photographers today. The adjustment brush tool works on a similar concept and does the job decently. It’s one of those tools you might be tempted to use on every photo, but once you go through my video you’ll know when to use and what are the side-effects of this tool.

Develop Module — Basic Panel

You’ll be spending the majority of your post-processing time in the Basic Panel as all the global adjustments to a photo are done here. It comprises of 12 sliders and is more than enough if you understand them well and put them to practice. Most of your post-processing happens in the Basic Panel & Details Panel.

Basic Panel in Adobe Lightroom Classic CC (Creative Cloud) Post-Processing Software

Develop Module — Basic Panel — White Balance (14:22 minutes)

Getting the perfect White Balance in the field might not be that easy for nature photographers as the light can change dramatically. With RAW files, it doesn’t have to be a problem anymore.  Lightroom provides you preset White Balance settings as well as a Custom setting. You’ll learn how to use them and also how you can set the perfect white balance. You’ll also learn how to identify if there’s a color cast in your photo and how to easily fix the same.

Basic Panel–White Balance in Adobe Lightroom Classic CC (Creative Cloud) Post-Processing Software

Develop Module — Basic Panel — Tone (18:23 minutes)

Tone module in the Basic Panel is where you’d work on Exposure and Contrast in a photo. While the Contrast slider works on Global contrast, the other four sliders—Highlights, Shadows, Whites, & Blacks—work on local contrast which is powerful. You’ll also learn how to perfectly set the Black point and the White point which is critical to getting the right look for a landscape photograph.

You might not realize how powerful is the Histogram until you see it in the Lightroom. Once you understand and learn how to “read” the Histogram, you’ll easily be able to take this learning back to the field to get better exposures. It can be a life-saver.

Develop Module—Basic Panel—Presence (16:37 minutes)

Another powerful tool in Lightroom is the Clarity slider which helps to bring out the subtle details in an image. It works on local contrast and is perhaps the most useful tool for nature photographers. But as with most powerful tools, you have to be extremely careful when you work with these sliders. There’s a subtle but profound difference between Vibrance & Saturation which I have explained with examples.

Develop Module—Tone Curve Panel (5:54 minutes)

The Tone Curve panel is probably the least used one as it’s just a different representation of the Sliders that you find in the Basic Panel. If you are from Photoshop world, which was driven primarily by the Curves, you’ll instantly recognize that it’s just a trimmed down version. I have given a short introduction to you in case if you prefer using it.

Tone Curve Panel in Adobe Lightroom Classic CC (Creative Cloud) Post-Processing Software

Develop Module—HSL/Color Panel (32:25 minutes)

HSL panel is arguably the most advanced feature in Lightroom. You can do pretty much anything you want with a specific color in your photograph. You can manipulate the Hue (the color itself). Saturation (how saturated color is), and Luminance (the light or dark tone of the color).

If you have seen photos where there is just one color present and the rest of the image is in black and white, it’s mostly done in the HSL panel. But, HSL panel is not built for that. It’s a really useful tool if you understand how colors are represented and how light can manipulate what we see as the end result.

As a nature photographer, you’ll have to deal with some extreme colors that are difficult to capture perfectly in a single exposure. That’s when you can work with the HSL panel to make the colors look more natural. It can also be used to change the way a color looks by using the Hue panel.

Develop Module—Detail Panel—Sharpening (11:40 minutes) & Noise Reduction (12:23 minutes)

Details panel helps you Sharpen a photograph and/or reduce the Noise. These two functions along with Basic Panel will get you most of the results you need. In this module, you’ll learn how to selectively sharpen the details with ease. It’s not as tough as painfully selecting the subject as you do in Photoshop. Not even close.

Also, you’ll learn when noise reduction is necessary and when it’s not. And, believe me, most often you don’t have to reduce the noise at all as I have explained in-depth in the course.

Develop Module—Lens Correction Panel (6:41 minutes)

Lens correction allows you to quickly correct the Lens Distortion (due to the use of ultra-wide angle lens) and Chromatic Aberrations in a photo. Just by checking the two options will do the job. That’s it.

Develop Module—Transform Panel (2:29 minutes)

You can correct the perspective distortions like leaning poles or trees, that are common when you shoot with an ultra-wide angle lens, using the Transform panel. It’s quite powerful in a way that it allows you to correct the distortions in vertical as well as horizontal direction. You might not necessarily use this panel often, but it does a good job when called for.

Develop Module—Effects Panel (8:52 minutes)

Effects panel helps you to add the vignetting to a photo! While you usually try to take out the vignetting caused due to ultra-wide angle lens, here you try to add it! Sounds weird. Let me tell you that it doesn’t look the same as the vignetting that comes off an ultra-wide angle lens. Adding a Post-Crop Vignetting to a landscape image (sometimes to bird/wildlife images) helps you create an illusion of depth which I have explained in the course in length. And it’s just a push of a slider which does the job!

Exporting Files — Masterprints (17:23 minutes) & Social Media with Watermark (19:47 minutes)

Once you post-process your files, you’ll have to export them (in other words, save them). You’ll learn how to save a Masterprint which will help you to derive any number of photos for any purpose like printing, magazine, social media, etc. in the future. You’ll also learn to save a low-resolution JPEG file along with how to create, apply, and save your own watermark to publish on Social Media.

Keyboard Shortcuts (7:06 minutes)

While I have explained all the essential keyboard shortcuts while I use them in the during post-processing, I have also compiled all of them in one video for easy access. It’ll be a quick way to remind yourself of all the shortcuts that you learned in the course. But, I use a very minimal number of shortcuts that are quite useful.

What’s the point of understanding every panel and slider out there in Lightroom if you are not sure how to put them to use in a systematic manner? While I do take examples while explaining each and every panel, there’s no comparison to taking you through the complete workflow. Isn’t it?

There are five workflow videostwo bird photos & three landscape photos—that take you through the entire post-processing steps from start to finish. Which means you’ll see how I post-process my photographs by using the same tools and techniques that I have covered in the entire video course. It’ll give you the proper perspective of how to put all those learnings to use.

RAW Files Included!

What’s more? I have included all 5 RAW files for you to follow-along my videos and apply the post-processing steps yourself! Is there any better way to learn? I doubt.

I have kept all these videos candid, which means you can see how the process evolves. These photos are not processed before and I am not trying to emulating the results. I am just going with the flow. And on the way make many mistakes and you’ll see me going back and forth to get the results I am after.

Not only will you see me going back-and-forth on several sliders, but you’ll also see my thought process behind it. Because I have described each and every step and have reasoned as to why I am using what I am using. This way you’ll grasp the concepts and will also know how you can incorporate them in your processing workflow.

You’ll also understand that post-processing is usually about how you want your photograph to look rather than a prescribed set of steps as it’s usually touted by the presets makers. While presets might be useful starting points, they themselves cannot replace your vision.

The greatest benefit, according to me, is that you’ll get to see how you can get similar results using different panels. This will help you understand that there are multiple ways of getting the same/similar results. It’s left to you to decide which ones to use for any given situation.

I hope I have made it very clear as to what to expect from this new video course—Post-Processing for Nature Photographers using Adobe Lightroom Classic CC. I hope you make use of this opportunity and start discovering this easy-to-use yet powerful post-processing software.
