Last December I conducted my first Bird Photography Workshop in Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary.
Ranganathittu bird sanctuary, though very small sanctuary, boasts several species of birds. More than the number of bird species it’s the close proximity at which you can watch and photograph the birds which make it my favorite bird sanctuary.
Birds in Ranganathittu bird sanctuary are primarily accessed via boat ride. Birds are so accustomed to these boats that you can photograph even with a normal telephoto lens. Most often you will witness a spot-billed pelican fly right over your head. It’s an experience of a lifetime.
I was hooked to bird photography because of this very bird sanctuary. You can check this interesting story about the “Angel Wings” which is probably the key turning point in my career.
The Ranganathittu bird photography workshop was only for 6 members making it much easier for me to pay individual attention. I think that’s the key to any photography workshop. Every participant should improve his/her photography skills to a large extent. That’s what it is meant to do…isn’t it?
Ranganathittu bird photography workshop’s highlight was that we had people from all age groups and from different states. It was a mix of culture and a mix of experience and thought process. It was an amazing experience.
The idea of this article is to showcase some of the best photographs taken from the participants. In a short span of time, they were able to pull off some exceptional photographs. I am quite thrilled to share their photographs and their views about my workshop.
Here it goes…
“Thoroughly enjoyed the class. The class was simple and was very well handled. Class size was perfect hence individual attention was possible at every instance. Quite satisfied that we had ample opportunity to try various aspects like flying birds, back-lighting, portrait etc.
In addition to that, your simplified approach for camera controls have made me concentrate on main aspects like exposure and composition rather than waste time on multiple settings.
I would certainly rate your class as 5, Under the scale 1 To 5 , 5 being highest.”-

“The trip was very useful and have learned a lot in very short span. You are so knowledgeable and we could have more sessions in the future to at least learn a few techniques from your vast knowledge and experience.
Even though the program was very tight and engaging and wanting time I did not feel tired of learning as it was interesting too.
Hope to join in future sessions and learn a lot.”
“Your 2 days Seminar [Masterclass] has changed my view about bird photography and you made it impossible to possible. It was power-house of technical knowledge of photography for us” – Sunil Karangale
“The workshop [was] so well organised and conducted by you. I learnt a great deal about bird photography and the camera settings necessary for taking photos of birds, especially birds in flight. I still have a lot to learn but at least I am on the right path. Your personal interest in the participants made all the difference. The instructions, both during the shoot and during our discussions were where I learnt a lot.”
“The Masterclass in the month of December was simply too good with lot of learning from you. The techniques you taught us were really useful and I am extremely satisfied with the results of the shooting during Masterclass. Your in-depth knowledge on Bird Photography is simply superb. Many Amateurs like me are getting useful tips on the subject. You have really mastered the art of Bird Photography.
“Nature Photography Simplified…You actually simplified it in a very simple manner. I never thought I could capture flying birds…you made it so simple for me. Sincere thanks for the workshop Prathap. It was the best ever Photography workshop attended by me.”
– Sandeep Karmore
